ABSTRACT
The most dreaded experience for an academic is the tenure process. Without tenure, you cannot stay permanently at an institution as a professor, and you must go job hunting in an uncertain market. Some schools may consider it a stain on your record if you tried but failed to obtain tenure; with it, you remove uncertainty.
