ABSTRACT

Use of alcohol on an alternative break could not only result in worst-case scenarios for the program and university, but also have broader repercussions. The negative impacts of extreme cases could reverberate throughout the alternative break movement, institutions of higher education, and non-profit organizations. The benefits of alcohol- and drug-free alternative breaks are both practical and symbolic. Alcohol consumption in moderation is appropriate in many settings, and students who participate in alternative break programs are adults. Alcohol- and drug-free policies keep the group centered on the purpose and social justice focus of the trip. Host communities provide the enticement for the groups to violate the alcohol policy if they offer alcohol as part of a celebration, relaxation, or farewell. Alternative break groups work to build strong relationships with host communities, and alcohol can create a serious possibility of leaving a bad impression in the community.
