ABSTRACT

In reality, program structures vary dramatically, not because one is more ideal than the other, but rather due to differing campus cultures, program histories, settings, contexts, and personalities that created the structure. A successful alcohol- and drug-free policy is integrated in all levels of an alternative break program. The major responsibilities of the executive board are to develop the vision and goals for the program, train and equip site leaders, and ensure the program is both successful and prepared for continuous improvement and growth. The executive board oversees program operations, including finances, fund-raising, and budgeting. The executive board coordinates large events, including site reveals and kickoffs. A program-based structure brings together leaders in pairs to work nonhierarchically as a team. An alternative break program advisor is the university staff person charged with overseeing the program as a whole.
