ABSTRACT

Program leaders who thrive because they love facilitating student development and developing new ways of working for justice with community partnerships, may find logistics and managing risk to be an annoyance. Through improving logistics and risk management, program leaders can also advance the justice focus of their alternative break program. In addition, when students are involved in logistics planning, they gain ownership of the trip and develop project management skills that can serve them well in many other settings, including their careers. The logistics of alternative breaks are extensive and include budget and meal planning, transportation arrangements, paperwork, and itinerary planning. Logistics for international alternative breaks are often more complicated than for domestic trips. Although staff advisors could handle logistics alone, training student leaders to manage much of the logistics and risk management can also be part of student development while allowing staff to focus on other priorities.
