ABSTRACT

Alternative break experiences are opportunities to build authentic relationships with diverse people. The transformational power of alternative breaks is increased when students focus on social justice education and solidarity, and when they challenge students to reflect on their role in global inequalities. A justice-based model stems organically from the values embedded in the eight components of quality alternative breaks. Many alternative break programs are offered through student affairs offices and share values of social justice with the broader field. Alternative breaks that utilize the eight components, focus on active citizenship, and develop strong, mutually beneficial partnerships can be models of justice-based community engagement. Capacity building supports a community in achieving their goals by equipping them with needed skills, resources, and abilities.
