ABSTRACT

In this chapter I first introduce the neighbourhood of Akihabara and explain why dansō escort companies choose it as their ideal location. Then, I provide a description of the crossdresser escorts company Dreamland, where I conducted my fieldwork, explaining how I approached the company management and the crossdressers working there, discussing the ethnographic methodology I adopted. I reflect about my role as a foreign researcher and practitioner, and I investigate, in a self-reflexive manner, how I managed my field relations, what kind of efforts this field research required of me, and what I have done to ethically represent my research participants and the investigated phenomenon.
