ABSTRACT

In Chapter 4, drawing upon the previous chapter, I focus on how crossdressers manage their social relationships inside and outside the world of crossdressing. Interactions with clients require dansō to adapt their identity to the wishes of paying customers, sacrificing their honest self-expression. Furthermore, living their crossdressing escort life might conflict with social interactions with families, friends or partners in real life, thus requiring constant negotiations. I also discuss the connection between dansō and the LGBTQ+ community.
