ABSTRACT

This chapter represents the systematic review performed by the author, exploring the bibliographic databases Google Scholar, Microsoft Academic, and Web of Science. All articles including the phrases (“China-Indonesia” and “COVID-19”) or (“China-Indonesia” and “pandemic”) were searched. A total of 116 studies were deemed eligible. After reading and analysing all 116 studies, the chapter summarises the scholarly understanding of China-Indonesia economic and health diplomacy. This chapter examines the economic relations between China and Indonesia in recent decades, noting that Sinophobia has remained profound in Indonesia. The chapter next demonstrates how the outbreak of COVID-19 was instrumentalised by China to develop its health diplomacy with Indonesia. The chapter further outlines the trajectory of how economic and health diplomacy was initiated and strengthened between China and Indonesia throughout the pandemic. This chapter analyses why China-Indonesia economic and health diplomacy/cooperation was reinforced and highlights what risks or costs against Indonesia were inflicted by the consolidated China-Indonesia bilateral relations.
