ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 develops a theory of multiple narrative space, which argues that the content of slash stories must be considered both as individual pieces of expression but also, in dialogue, as multiple versions of the same events. This chapter argues that, although individual stories may be politically radical or conservative, slash communities create space to imagine alternatives to settled aesthetic and ideological structures by undermining the authority of any one narrative. Yet, as long as LGBTQI+ stories remain underrepresented in mainstream mass media, slash will also continue to function as a unique space for queer expression.
