ABSTRACT

At Halsingborg Central the Italia Express is hauled by a diesel shunter on tram rails through the centre of the town, beside the main road. After crossing the main square and bus terminus, close by the passenger boat quay, the express disappears down an alley, squeezes past a petrol station, and next crosses the main road to Halsingborg Ferry Station to rejoin electrified tracks leading to Gothenburg. The Amsterdam-Rome U class car of the Italia Express, which is Dutch, leaves at tea-time; but afternoon tea in Pullman cars is just a memory in Holland today, although the first service ever to be run in that country was an ex-American Pullman, bought in Italy by the Wagons-Lits in 1880, and worked between Amsterdam and Rotterdam. The Italia Express pauses for twenty-five minutes in Milan, to become the principal morning train to Rome, though it is preceded by the faster, supplementary fare Vesuvius Arrow Electrotrain to Rome and Naples.
