ABSTRACT

The Night Ferry is the only Wagons-Lits service in England, and though it has always occupied a high place in the Company's timetable, second only to the Golden Arrow on the list of Grand European Expresses, London is very much an outpost of the Company's far-flung operations. The railway climbs on a steep curve out of Victoria on to Grosvenor Bridge over the Thames. In the days of steam the Night Ferry's two engines invariably needed assistance on starting, so the engine which brought the train in from the sidings gave a good push at the rear. The rails leading to the ramp are provided with a pair of loop lines. This enables the wagons off-loaded from the ferry to be moved quickly out of the way of those waiting to embark.
