ABSTRACT

On 6 September, his home at Kredytowa Street 6 was bombarded, and he left Warsaw. We can well reconstruct the route of his flight, which led through the lands under Soviet occupation to Lithuania. Probably some of the events described in his autobiography did not happen, their description served to account for Lemkin’s pre-war hopes and expectations. He reached Vilnius and later awaited his Swedish visa in Kaunas. On 27 February 1940, Lemkin landed in Stockholm. He remained in Sweden for much longer than the two months agreed upon when his visa was issued. Crucially, having swiftly mastered the language, he was also presented with an opportunity to give lectures at Swedish universities. He started to compile the relevant materials about the German occupation policy. Lemkin set out on his journey to the United States with a group of refugees on 20 March 1941.
