ABSTRACT

Following his studies, Lemkin traveled across Western Europe, but he did not study in Germany or in France. On 25 May 1926, shortly before Lemkin received his doctoral degree, Samuel Schwarzbard shot Ukrainian émigré Symon Petliura. Lemkin graduated in 1926 and on 9 July he received the degree of the Doctor of Law. Initially, he was into criminal law and international law. At that time (that is, in the second half of the 1920s), Lemkin was active in the Zionist movement. He joined the Zionist organization “Jardenia”, was a person well-known in the Zionist circles, and lectured on law in the Jewish religious seminar “Tachkemoni”. In his professional capacity, he was mostly operating in the Polish milieus or among the assimilated Jews, such as Emil Stanisław Rappaport. Lemkin participated in a project to draft a unified legislation for all the territories of the state in the sphere of criminal law. He was professionally active as prosecutor and wrote more academic publications.
