ABSTRACT

The most senior executive in an organization is not, as per a job title, a “leader”; an apprentice in the same organization is not as per his hierarchical position a “follower.” The former may “manage people” based on her authority but coercion doesn’t motivate people to give their best. A CEO has formal power, an apprentice doesn’t, but he may have informal power – the power of influence. Leadership does not only happen in the world of organizations; it happens in ordinary day-to-day situations in which personal initiative makes a difference. Effective leadership, whether in an organizational or a generic context depends on influencing and communication skills.
