ABSTRACT

Leadership as a social concept is subject to the principles of evolutionary biology. The genetic evolution of humans has not kept pace with cultural evolution which makes for a misalignment between the two: our mind and body appear perfectly adapted to a world that doesn’t exist anymore. Yet, contrary to common perceptions, the relevance of our sensory apparatus has not diminished in a modern world with its ubiquitous sensors, controllers, or artificial light sources. It is through our senses that we are in a constant conversation with one another although we might not say a single word. In an excursion into the astonishing world of our “five plus two” senses, it becomes clearer why modern humans continue to rely on, and be influenced by, sensory input.
