ABSTRACT

People tend to be influenced by other people's facial expressions, postures, vocalizations, or movements, and in keeping with the somatic theory of emotions, they may therefore also come to experience the emotions underlying the expressions they mimic. 1 An emotional feedback loop amplifies positive feelings: seeing a colleague with a broad smile on her face will make other people mimic that facial expression and, with it, the associated feeling. Influence also happens through ostentatious visual signals such as attire, commonly exploited by manipulators, or physical attractiveness. Touch and voice are equally effective influencing tools.
