ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the philosophy of Zhang Junmai 张君劢. Zhang is also a key figure of the first generation of the new Confucianism movement discussed in this book. This chapter focuses on Zhang’s political philosophy and comparative philosophy. Zhang is famous for his idea of constitutional democracy. Zhang was affected by both Anglo-American political and ideological tradition, as well as German tradition, with the characteristics of a compromise between them. Regarding his comparative philosophy, Zhang is distinctive because of his extremely open attitude towards western philosophy, compared to other figures in his book. He tries to use Kantian philosophy to understand Confucianism, especially Confucian moral theory.
