ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the philosophy of He Lin 贺麟. He is also an important figure of the first generation of the new Confucianism movement. This chapter focuses on his idea of culture and his “mind-only idealism.” He criticizes the idea of “Chinese learning as the substance and western learning as the function,” the doctrine of “total westernization,” and the declaration of “local standard culture.” Furthermore, he puts forward the idea of “transforming western learning into Chinese learning.” Furthermore, He tries to construct a kind of comprehensive philosophy that is above materialism and idealism, subjective idealism, and objective idealism.
