ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the philosophy of Fang Dongmei 东美方. Fang is also a key figure of the first generation of new Confucianism movement discussed in this book. As one of the most original Chinese philosophers in the 20th century, Fang chooses the good elements from other cultures to rebuild Chinese culture, which is very inclusive. Fang’s comparative philosophy has two levels. On the macro level, Fang compares ancient Greece and modern European and Chinese cultures. On the micro level, Fang compares primitive Confucianism, primitive Daoism, Mahayana Buddhism, and Song-Ming Neo-Confucianism. Fang argues that perfecting the spiritual life is the commonality of all these cultures.
