ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the philosophy of Tang Junyi 唐君毅. Tang is one of the three key figures of the second generation of the new Confucianism movement. This chapter first focuses on his idea of the moral self. Tang argues that the existence of all cultural activities depends on the idea of moral self. Cultural activities themselves are without consciousness, but they express a moral value, which is a moral self. This chapter then moves on to explain his theory of human spiritual realms. He claims that we have nine different levels of spiritual enlightenment. The rest of this chapter discusses his research on history of Chinese philosophy, especially his research on Mengzi.
