ABSTRACT

Chapter 10 discussions two main topics: boundary violations and mindful communication. The first part of the chapter emphasizes the importance of understanding and respecting the boundaries of others. It provides examples of boundary violations, and encourages clients to identify instances in which they have engaged in such violations and learn how to avoid doing so in the future. The second part of the chapter focuses on mindful communication and the challenges many people face in expressing themselves, setting boundaries, and asking for what they need. These challenges often stem from a desire to be liked. The chapter suggests various ways to be more effective in interpersonal communication, including fact-checking one’s assumptions; using wise mind to respond effectively and non-judgmentally during tense discussions; developing rational responses that consider both the other person’s wellbeing and needs and one’s own; and practicing opposite actions to avoid walking away from problems or engaging in an ineffective manner.
