ABSTRACT

This chapter emphasizes that clients can improve their emotional wellbeing in a variety of situations by “rewiring” the brain. It suggests various strategies to regulate negative emotions and prevent further suffering. These strategies include changing emotional responses; solving problems; radically accepting the situation—or at least refraining from exacerbating the situation; and conditioning wise mind through the use of DAPPER skills. In order to change emotional responses, clients are first encouraged to observe and consider whether the situation poses an imminent threat to their life. If not, clients are encouraged to challenge their emotional response by fact-checking their thoughts. Clients are advised to ask themselves if their thoughts are helpful, factual, and aligned with the current situation; and to consider alternative interpretations and perspectives.
