ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 focuses on psychoeducation and skills training in the first area of dysregulation among sexual offenders: sexual dysregulation. I have emphasized how sexual dysregulation, including deviant sexual fantasies and using sex to cope with negative emotions, contributes to sexual offending. The aim of the material taught and discussed here is to create an open atmosphere and increase clients’ comfort discussing sex and their perceptions of sexuality, and the implications of their perceptions of sexuality on their offense. This chapter allows the clinician to gauge clients’ level of sexual knowledge, have an open conversation about intrusive thoughts and compulsive behaviors, and educate clients about healthy sexual practices in order to build a life worth living, and reduce their chance of reoffending.
