ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces key concepts that are foundational to this study and a theoretical framework that highlights the process of leader development that is associated with crucible experiences. Crucibles can be considered trials, challenges, or growth opportunities, and they are essential in the development of leaders. To explore these experiences, we conducted 40 life story interviews with members of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) College of Fellows. We chose to focus our study on the Fellows because of their recognized status as role models and exemplars in the public relations profession. Their experiences are often recalled in the format of a story or narrative and are shared in the remaining chapters.
