ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces Sarah Schulman, a novelist, activist, playwright, educator and archivist whose work is the main concern of this monograph. The chapter highlights how her life is intertwined with her work as a writer, in an attempt to situate the five novels this book deals with in the context of a much larger oeuvre. It begins with a discussion of her family history and the trajectory of her political engagement. Then it moves on to her work as a writer, reviewing all her novels and nonfiction books, as well as her other output as a screenwriter and playwright. The final section of the chapter comprises a literature review of the extant scholarship on Schulman.
