ABSTRACT

This chapter is devoted to the second phase of the development of the Jordan myth. During this phase, the myth is expanded and new Campbellian mythemes appear, making the myth more complete in terms of the hero’s journey. While certain recurring narrative patterns can be observed in the texts which continue to tell the Jordan myth (every NBA season is The [New] Road of Trials), collectively, these narratives expand and enrich the myth with mythemes, such as the Symbolic Atonement with [Jordan’s late] Father. In addition to real-life events, which happened in Jordan’s life, the expansion of the Jordan myth occurs due to a shift in the protagonist’s role as well as in his quest, which takes place after Jordan wins his first NBA championship in 1991. Since then, as a character of the Jordan myth, he is no longer a hero-warrior but a warrior-king. Moreover, Jordan’s quest is not to be a champion but either the greatest or one of the greatest basketball champions; he is chasing immortality.
