ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 asks readers to stretch their thinking about partners in the process of collaboration. Time and time again, we bring in the same experts and individuals in our educational system to work together, all individuals who are positive and helpful experts. Yet, to redesign special education, we have to think bigger and think outside of the box. The chapter challenges readers to bring in experts who will have conflicting viewpoints, such as advocates, community members, association representatives, paraprofessionals and other community leaders. Often, leaders don’t bring these individuals to the table because they might have conflicting ideas or may not understand the educational rules. If we are going to make changes, we need just those voices and those conflicting ideas at the table to solve problems. The chapter will give examples of successful and unexpected collaborative partners that must be considered to make the necessary changes.
