ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the concept of leaders empowering others as one collaborative approach. Collaboration can be freeing, and it can be a process of letting go. Leaders need to curate opportunities, ask questions and have the ability to listen. To change the system, leaders need to learn how to lead from behind and curate the expertise of others rather than acting as sole decision-makers. The chapter shares stories of empowering a system change around professional learning as well as empowering principal leaders in their role in special education. It promotes a climate of compromise and shaping leaders in a more impactful way. By freeing ourselves from the weight of every decision and lifting up others, we also create partners in those decisions.
