ABSTRACT

This chapter presents detailed results of the screening of demographic and maternal variables. The screening procedure consisted of the formation of 2 x 2 tables to test for associations between the presence of a minimal brain dysfunction (MBD) symptom and dichotomous or dichotomized antecedents. The three MBD symptoms — learning difficulties, hyperkinetic-impulsive behavior, and neurological “soft signs” — were again defined as any score in the extreme 8% of the factor score distribution in the MBD cohort. The frequency of MBD symptoms among children of mothers with both unskilled and professional jobs was compared to the frequency in the rest of the cohort. Observed and expected frequencies of MBD symptoms were determined for both low and high socioeconomic index (SEI) intervals. Maternal education was also determined at the prenatal and 7-year interviews and, when the father was absent, was used as an SEI component.
