ABSTRACT

Chapter 1, Introduction, sets the scene for the rest of the book by summarising the development of the research questions addressed by the book and the context in which that research was carried out. The book considers how a culture of resistance manifests in a school experiencing a period of extended change. Specifically, it addresses what kind of place the participating secondary school students want school to be, how their relationships with teachers and other school staff affect their engagement with school and what kind of person they want to be recognised as. The introduction also gives a brief overview of the rest of the book.
