ABSTRACT

Herbal remedies have always been a key component of African culture. “African traditional medicine is the oldest, and perhaps the most assorted, of all therapeutic systems. Africa is the cradle of mankind with a rich biological and cultural diversity marked by regional differences in healing practices.” It is important to understand the significant role these traditions play in the greater health of the nation. There is evidence to suggest that the composition of the gum removes plaque from teeth if the people chew on it every day over the course of a week. Aloe vera is typically used to treat skin conditions. Stinging nettles are often thought of because they cause skin irritations – besides a nettle bush they often find a dock leaf nearby which can be used to soothe the skin of the irritation that has been caused. While sorrel can be made into a beautiful drink, it has more properties than just being a good-tasting drink.
