ABSTRACT

Haiti is a country in the Caribbean Sea that shares the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic. The capital is Port-au-Prince. The majority of Haiti’s population are of African origin. A small minority of people are of mixed European and African descent. In over ten years of sustained internal and international warfare, a colony populated predominantly by enslaved Africans overthrew both its colonial status and its economic system and established a new state of entirely free individuals. On 1 January 1804, the entire island was declared independent under the name of Haiti by former lieutenant Dessalines, who took over leadership as emperor after Toussaint was captured and detained. In summary, the work of the Haitian Revolution to break the first link of colonial rule in the West Indies had far-reaching results, such as the ending of African slavery, which in turn started the process of emancipation in all the Americas.
