ABSTRACT

The very first Black town in the USA was Fort Mose, Florida, in 1738, where the European settlers, the Spanish, fought with the enslaved Africans and after years of fighting for freedom the enslaved were finally free. Black men, women and children then began their new lives in the town of Fort Mose. At the end of the Civil War within the time period of the 18th century, Black settlers from America fought for a better way of living, fleeing from different forms of oppression that began to emerge. In the upcoming years, in 1969 the Black settlements formed an alliance called the Freedom Colonies Project. Pupils will create a visual thought bubble of their initial ideas about the Nicodemus community. Encourage pupils to verbally share their ideas before drawing and note taking, and inspire them to think about the thought bubble as a ‘step into their mind’.
