ABSTRACT

Pupils will be using their project planning skills to develop a griot storytelling ceremony, in which they will recount their own written storytelling ideas, accompanied by the instrumentalist feature of Kora strumming in the background. Pupils will listen to and watch examples of griot storytelling experiences in order to identify the features that they would like to use in their own storytelling ideas. Storytelling circles are facilitated by community leaders who consider griot practitioners to hold spiritual wisdom. In many ways, griot storytelling experiences are ceremonies that provide clarity around the themes of births, deaths, marriages and battles. Oral tradition holds historical and cultural importance in African communities around the world. Similarly, hip-hop is a sustained form of African storytelling that reigns supreme in the African diaspora and, ultimately, popular culture.
