ABSTRACT

To use the Black Panther Community News Service articles to learn about the social impact that the Black Panther Party had in the local community of Oakland, California. The Free Breakfast Program was the first and most successful community program led by the Black Panthers. Free breakfast was administered by the organisation to tackle education inequalities among Black children in the state of California. The Free Breakfast Program became so successful that in 1969, the Black Panthers had reportedly fed more poor children than the entire state of California had. By creating access to healthy food, setting up health clinics and building programs to share necessary information, the Black Panther party put self-care into necessary action. Pupils will use their worksheets and the aerial photograph/Google maps image of their local area (including the school) to draw a bird’s-eye view plan of their local area.
