ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to explore the different women warriors (Nana Yaa Asantewaa, Queen Moremi, Dahomey women warriors and Queen Nzingha) that have become powerful and respected leaders in Africa. Dahomey women warriors were an all-female military army of the Republic of Benin, which was known at the time as the Kingdom of Dahomey. These women were collectively married to the king but did not have intimate relations with him. The Dahomey Ahosi were the women-only military of the Republic of Benin, at that time known as the Kingdom of Dahomey. Recruited as teenagers, the women lived in the royal palace, separated from the rest of society. Nzinga was a politically conscious leader, aware that agreeing to trade with the Portuguese would be a poisoned chalice given the events in other Central African states.
