ABSTRACT

The Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005 set out the main legislative requirements for controlling exposure to vibration in the workplace and cover both hand-arm vibration and whole-body vibration. They require employers to assess and control the risks to persons who may be exposed to vibration. This chapter deals with the most frequently encountered and most damaging form of vibration, namely hand-arm vibration. Exposure to hand-arm vibration can result in hand-arm vibration syndrome, for which there is no effective cure or treatment, or carpal tunnel syndrome; they are prescribed diseases. It focuses on understanding and evaluating the associated risks, determining vibration exposure, developing a control strategy, and providing health surveillance, training, information, and instruction.
