ABSTRACT

The use of electrical systems in the workplace introduces many hazards, which if not properly controlled can have serious consequences. The employer or person having control of a business premises therefore needs to take action to prevent the risk of electrocution of persons working on or near an electrical system or using an electrical appliance, and electrical fires or explosions which can seriously disrupt the operation of the business. This chapter provides guidance on the basic principles of protection against electric shock in the workplace, which can be used as a reference source for other sections. It also provides sufficient information for employers to effectively manage the risks associated with their electrical systems. Practical advice is given on how to ensure the safe use of both fixed electrical systems and portable appliances.
