ABSTRACT

A family support approach to practice with neurodivergent children and their families aims to acknowledge and respond to the holistic needs of the family as a whole. The interdependency of family members upon one another and on the whole family system are particularly relevant to the support needs of neurodivergent children and their families.

This chapter explores theory and approaches which inform practice in supporting families and presents a robust rationale for a family support approach, when supporting families of neurodivergent children. Case studies and reflective exercises throughout prompt readers to consider the application of family support theory to the lived reality experienced by families caring for an autistic child or a child with ADHD or dyspraxia. This chapter presents assessment criteria and practice strategies specific to a family support approach, aimed at creating supportive environments for neurodivergent children and their families.
