ABSTRACT

ADHD is a neurodivergent condition which is categorised as a psychiatric disorder and diagnosed using the DSM-5. ADHD presents via symptoms of inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsiveness. Yet what does ADHD really mean for the child and their family? How does ADHD impact every facet of the child’s life? What are some of the most challenging issues presented by ADHD, which you may not have heard about previously?

This chapter discusses how ADHD presents itself in childhood and explores how ADHD is assessed and diagnosed. The actuality of what ADHD really means for the child and their family is considered within this chapter, and distinctive challenges associated with ADHD are explored via candid reflections and realistic case studies. This chapter explores the impact of ADHD in adulthood and further explores the systemic issues which impact the child living with ADHD and their family.
