ABSTRACT

Another avenue for a professional career post-doctoral degree is in higher education. Universities and colleges have different organizational systems than public/private school systems. Faculty expectations for teaching, scholarship, and service are only sometimes intuitive to people entering higher education from a public school system. Faculty rank is critical, and understanding how a faculty member moves up the promotion process can make a big difference in being a successful instructor and researcher. Not every university has expectations for research, but knowing the expectations before applying for a position will make the application and interview process more transparent. This chapter will review the nuances of higher education institutions for prospective faculty members.
