ABSTRACT

Once accepted into a doctoral program, candidates must prepare themselves and their families for multiple years of scholarly work. Attending classes and doing homework in person or online take time and effort. Being intentional about time management and communicating boundaries to the family will help decrease the stress of the demands of this type of degree. Communicating with work associates and supervisors is also recommended. The support a candidate gets from family, friends, and work associates will make a substantial difference in physically and mentally maintaining a healthy lifestyle as a candidate travels through the program. Self-care is essential because a candidate will experience high stress while completing class assignments and their capstone project. This chapter will offer suggestions for doctoral candidates to maintain a healthy lifestyle while working on their degree.
