ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses contributions, limitations, and future research directions. There are three contributions. First, compared with previous studies on overseas students’ intercultural competence in China, this study focuses on domestic Chinese university students’ intercultural competence. Second, compared with the existing studies, the research investigates the influences of different “internationalization at home” strategies on domestic Chinese university students’ intercultural competence development. Third, this study verified the applicability of Deardorff’s theory and proposed possible theoretical suggestions based on the research in the Chinese context. In addition to the contributions, the research certainly has some limitations. For instance, only three Chinese elite universities are included. Comparative analysis of intercultural competence development between students’ cohorts could be explored in future research directions. Large-scale surveys will also need to be conducted in future research.
