ABSTRACT

School leaders are tasked with a seemingly endless list of responsibilities not only in ensuring learning outcomes are met but also in providing a safe, inclusive learning environment. With the amount of work and the immense pressure school leaders must endure, leading in schools can never be attributed to a single person; hence, leadership capabilities need to be distributed for the school to function sustainably. This chapter covers the application of distributed leadership to develop future leaders in multicultural schools. In recent years, distributed leadership has been widely practised in schools around the world, and its impact on capacity building and student learning outcomes has been heavily documented in studies conducted in Malaysian schools and in other countries. In the context of this book, the application of distributed leadership practices focuses on how school leaders can develop future leaders by building a culture of trust and by preparing aspiring leaders in a culturally diverse learning organisation.
