ABSTRACT

Basketball, like business, is highly competitive, team-oriented, and pressure-filled. It requires players to be conscious of strategy and their own innate talent, much like the employees in any professional organization. As Ken Blanchard, management expert, and author, stated, “What's fascinating about basketball and studying John Wooden is that basketball is a wonderful metaphor for life, for organizations, for businesses. After completion of that assignment, John was constantly editing and refining his thoughts on the topic, particularly as he commenced his own teaching career after graduating from Purdue University. He was both intrigued by and conflicted about determining the appropriate grade to assign to average students who were trying hard versus good students who were only partially applying their natural aptitude. As such, the Pyramid is a compilation of his ethical, spiritual, and pragmatic reflections.
