ABSTRACT
This chapter essentially deals with the seventeenth century. Greater labor demands stemming from the growth of plantation economies are counterpointed with changes in Africa. Due attention is paid, as throughout the book, to the South Atlantic which was a key slave trade area, but one generally underrated due to the standard focus on the Caribbean and North America.
