ABSTRACT

This chapter serves as an introduction to Flexing Interculturality. The idea of flexing is defined and problematized, indicating the need to ‘bend’ all aspects of the notion of interculturality in research and education, shifting it to and fro. The original method used in this book, fragment writing, is also presented, with its pros and cons discussed against potential critiques. Launched in 2020 by one of the authors (Dervin), fragment writing about, for and with interculturality aims to both open up and enrich how scholars and educators engage with the notion, beyond the limits of time, space, but also epistemic, disciplinary and linguistic domination. The introduction thus helps the reader make sense of this method and of the authors’ intentions. It is important to note that the book requires some sound basic knowledge about the notion of interculturality as it has been discussed in different fields in global research. The end of the introduction reviews the structure of the book and suggests working methods for the reader to engage with its content.
