ABSTRACT

The family therapist in action does not always know what he/she is doing. Sometimes the therapist acts intuitively in the session, not based on his/her conscious reflections and but rather in response to things that happen. Sometimes such intuitive actions prove to be mistakes, but very often a (especially experienced) therapist's intuitive actions turn out to be very effective. Dual process theories from social psychology (for instance Nobel prize winner Daniel Kahneman's theory) can help us understand this.
