ABSTRACT

The Canadian Radio-Television Commission (CRTC) is the public authority established by Parliament to regulate all broadcasting. The public hearings held by the CRTC, on licence applications, on proposed regulations, and on matters of general policy provide a forum for the continuing discussion of broadcasting in Canada. The Broadcasting Act established the procedures which apply when differences arise between the CRTC and the CBC in regard to conditions the CRTC may propose to attach to CBC station or network licences. The Minister of Communications or the Executive Committee of the Commission may, on notice, require licensees to broadcast a programme of urgent importance. The primary duty of the department of communications act is to develop policies and programmes in communications systems for Canada.
