ABSTRACT

The CRTC maintains continuing relationships with broadcasters apart from the formal one required by legislation. The regular flow of information to the CRTC on programming and sales and operations enables the CRTC to monitor the system and keep up-to-date on significant developments. The CRTC and the Directors of the CBC occasionally hold joint meetings to examine matters of common interest to both public bodies. Some private stations in Canada are required by licence to carry a number of CBC programmes each week as outlets for the radio and television networks. From the beginning Parliamentary committees have played an important role in shaping the course of Canadian broadcasting. As the national service, the CBC has for many years maintained agreements with each of the provinces for the provision of radio and television educational broadcasts to schools.
